🖊️Sneak Peek Sunday🖊️
What am I currently working on and willing to share with you? Check it out!⬇️
This week’s teaser is from Unifying the Nyanine. Atsatsa is our focus today as we get a sneak peek of his future, of his mate, and what he thinks about finding her. Now, remember, his story will remain unfinished in this book, but we will find out the full extent of what happens to him in his novella, Revealing Atsatsa’s Monster. It’s plotted, just need to get to writing it lol.
I gently knock on her bedroom door, calling out to her. I hear a tiny response, a gentle voice. A small sigh escapes me. Good, she’s been inside, she’s safe, and hopefully, her enemies don’t know she’s here yet. If I can help it, we’ll keep it that way. They won’t know she’s here, and she won’t know me or my face if at all possible.
“Are you okay?” I call through the door, refusing to open it, unsure of how else to start this conversation.
“Yes, I’m fine. Is everything all right out there? I heard a loud noise, and I thought I heard screaming.” She sounds nervous, so I decide to give her a quick rundown so I can get back to it.
“There’s been an accident. Well, not really. Jeff was shot, targeted hit, so we’re scrambling to secure the village and everyone in it. Jeff may not survive, everything is up in the air right now. So I need you to stay put, stay hidden. Additional protective measures are being taken to not only amplify the shield around the village but for us hunters to do more. So, I’m not going to be home much, but someone, whether it be Kari or Willa or someone else, will come by to make sure you have company, food, whatever you need, okay?”
There’s a long pause before I hear a tiny, “Okay.”
I have no doubt that she’s placing blame on herself for not getting here fast enough or some other bullshit. She came, she warned Kari and Jeff, but sometimes, even knowing a threat is coming doesn’t stop it from succeeding. We weren’t expecting this type of infiltration, we were expecting an outside source to hit the barrier and protect us. We thought we were good. I suppose this is a lesson learned that you can never prepare too much or be too careful.
“Listen, Kristiella, don’t beat yourself up, okay. You did what you could, you warned us this was coming, and we thought we were well-prepared, that the barrier and other measures were enough. This person outsmarted us. They took some villagers who could walk through the barrier unimpeded and somehow convinced them to attack. We didn’t foresee this. However, we’re going to make this right. We’re going to keep our promise to protect you as well. We’ll figure this out, just trust us, okay?”
“I understand.” I hear a sniffle through the door, and I know my words haven’t really sunk in. But if she needs to cry it out, that’s her business. “Thank you for checking on me. If there’s anything I can do to help, just let me know.”
I nod, commending her for being so brave at a time like this when shit is literally flying from all directions. “Can do. I’ve got to go now, finish checking on others. If you need anything, let Kari know, and someone will take care of it.”
I don’t wait for her to respond, turning to leave the house before she decides to get up and open her door. As I head across the living room, I step on something that makes my foot slip on the wood floor. I turn and pick it up, realizing it’s some sort of ID tag from someplace in the city. I’ve heard about them but never really seen one. It must be hers, she’s the only person I know from the city. Well, aside from Vahru, but I don’t visit his house much or ask about his work.
Flipping it over without a thought, I see her name and ID number, but my eyes freeze on the image of her smiling back at me. The world seems to be frozen in time, I can hear my own heart beating in my ears, but my lungs don’t seem to work.
Blue-green eyes smile back at me, feeling as if they’re piercing my soul. Long, straight black hair cascades over a shoulder, the other side tucked behind her ear. Her lips are plump enough for me, her white teeth straight and shiny. The photo is long enough for me to tell she’s a little thicker in stature, but I don’t mind. Wouldn’t want to break her.
My head shakes as I finally break the spell, throwing the ID tag on the floor and running from the house, letting the front door slam behind me. I keep running until I hit the barrier behind my house, several minutes into the woods. My breathing is heavy, my heart hammering, and I’m shaky.
This isn’t happening. This is the last thing allowed to happen. Monsters don’t get happy endings, we don’t get fated mates. We’re meant to live with the eternal torment of what we’ve done because we’re horrible. She can never know who I am, never know what I’ve done, and never love me. If she never sees me, she’ll never know who I am to her. I can go on pretending I don’t know who she is to me, let the bond die on its own. Even if it kills me, it’ll let her live, and that’s the way it should be.
Was Kristiella based on my PA and BFF? Absolutely! Like I couldn’t give her a special cameo in one of my series, she’s been absolutely instrumental in helping me with all of this authoring stuff. She deserved it.♥
